Inhale. Exhale.
I stood in awe amongst the vastness of white from last night’s storm that had blanketed the towering trees in a powdery snow cover. Not often enough do I truly feel disconnected from the outside world. And that’s when the idea pops into my mind – I could totally see myself living here. Taking things to a simpler level and cutting out all of the ‘excess’ that is weighing down my life, and more importantly, weighing down my mind.
When I first heard about my friend moving to Truckee, California, I thought she was crazy. She is miles away from all of my top necessities – a Target, a Nordstrom, a Costco. Just typing that out made me feel ridiculous, those can’t possibly be labeled as ‘necessities’ in my life…could they?
I visited her one long blissful weekend and I was totally hooked. The simplicity of it all. Where less is more. We enjoyed good conversation over bottles of wine while we warmed up next to the fireplace. The highlight of my day was using the snow blower to clear the driveway and taking my dog on a eerily quiet walk through the white forest. By the end of the weekend, I felt so refreshed. But I craved more. Is this a sign? Maybe. And although I can’t shack up in the woods for years on end, I can certainly take home some of its effortless values with me and simplify my life.
Less is more. This mantra can be applied to all aspects of your day – relationships [both romantic and platonic], personal belongings, and activities [work, hobbies, free time]. Purge the excess and unnecessary. If it doesn’t contribute to your existence in a positive way, it’s gone. If you don’t gain any value from it, it’s gone. Only the beneficial and advantageous remain.
My Goals for a Fulfilling 2017
- Invest in memories, not material things.
- Be passionate about your work and the things that you contribute to life.
- It’s ok to say ‘no’. Don’t believe me? Just ask her.
- Be present. Cut out the distractions. Unplug! [I’m guilty of it too].
- Work hard. Play harder. Indulge in life!
